Jimmy Kamande sacked as Kenya captain – Cricket News
Cricket Kenya has decided that it is the right time for a change in leadership on the field and has removed Jimmy Kamande as captain of the national side. According to Tom Sears, the Chief Executive of Cricket http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kenya-c752, there were a combination of factors that
led to the decision.
One of the main reasons for the axing was the horrible showing of the Kenyan team in the ICC World Cup 2011. The side lost all of their six matches in the group stages and collapsed to more than their fair share of embarrassing defeats.
The Chief Executive said, "Cricket Kenya has taken the decision to stand down Jimmy Kamande as captain as part of the widespread changes we are making during our post World Cup review."
Kenya was looking to build on their semi-final finish in the 2007 edition of the World Cup but the team now seems to have taken a step backwards.
Jimmy Kamande dealt with the news in a professional manner, but stressed on the fact that he may not have been given the time he would have liked to have, to play his influence on the team.
Kamande stated, "There is no problem. The decision is not mine; it has been a short spell but a tough one because there has been a lot of happenings in the team."
Another reason for the change seems to be Kamande’s own poor showing at the World Cup, as he failed to lead his side by example and did not provide the leadership which the Kenyan board had been expecting.
Kenya now have a long break before they are to play against any side and the selectors will look to find a suitable replacement in the mean time. According to Tom Sears, the board will wait to see how the players perform in the T20 tournament to be held
in Africa.
Sears added, "Given that the national squad does not have any fixtures until July, when they feature in the African Cricket Association Twenty 20 tournament and we are in the process of recruiting a new national coach and appointing a new selection panel,
we will not be announcing a replacement at this stage."
The change the captaincy seems to be a part of the wholesale changes that are taking place with Cricket Kenya, as the side also ended their contract with Coach Eldine Baptiste. Former coach Baptiste still had a few months to go before the latter’s contract
was up, but both parties decided to part ways by mutual consent.
