Jimmy Rollins helps Philadelphia Phillies defeat Florida Marlins 5-3 - Part 1
Jimmy Rollins put in a brilliant performance to help Philadelphia Phillies defeat Florida Marlins 5-3 at Sun Life Stadium, Florida on Wednesday, May 11.
This particular match was what decided the series winner given that the Philadelphia Phillies and the Florida Marlins had managed to win one game each, previously in the three game series. The Phillies were successful this time around with more than ample
help from Jimmy Rollins who turned around the fate of the Phillies at the very end of the game.
If one were to look at the Phillies sitting in the dugout during the match, it could be seen clearly that they didn’t believe in their ability to win a match where they had gone without a run for six innings whereas Florida had managed to score three runs
before the seventh inning came around.
In the first match of the series, the Phillies were the winners, defeating Florida 6-4. The next match proved to be a winner for the Marlins who defeated the Phillies 1-2 when pitching aces from both teams took the mound for an unforgettable match in which
the numbers of the two pitchers were staggering. Although the Marlins won the game, their pitcher par excellence John Johnson was not able to secure a victory for himself against the reigning, two times Cy Young winner, Roy Halladay of the Phillies. Johnson
put in a brilliant pitching performance to contain the Phillies.
Cliff Lee, another one of Philadelphia’s star pitchers, failed to last too long as he came to bat, but him not lasting too long is what might have saved the day for the team.
Since the season started, Lee has been plagued with very poor run support. The Phillies are not known for their offence but somehow every time Lee takes the mound to pitch flawlessly, he does not get any run support from his team. When the game started,
the Phillies had not scored a single run while Lee was the pitcher since April 20. Joe Blanton and Romero were both placed on the Disabled List in that span.
The Phillies finally managed to score for the first time in the match where Lee had pitched this time around. They tied the score as the eighth inning rolled around after scoring for the first time in the seventh. Philadelphia finished off the game in the
ninth inning with a come from behind win.
The Phillies put in good performance as they managed to contain the Marlins’ offence for a convincing win. The Marlins worked hard and fought a tough battle with Phillies, but it was not enough for a win.
