Jimmy Rollins helps Philadelphia Phillies notch 3-1 victory against Miami Marlins - MLB Update
Starter Cliff Lee and shortstop Jimmy Rollins lead Philadelphia Phillies to 3-1 victory against the Miami Marlins at Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on September 12, 2012 in the last match of the three game series.
The low scoring game ended up in the Phillies’ favour. For the first five innings, both sides were scoreless. However as soon as the Marlins claimed a lead by adding one run in the sixth, Phillies replied immediately and tied the score.
With the match entering into penultimate innings, pressure mounted on both the teams. Rollins stood out in the process smashing a two-run homer in the seventh and provided the Phillies the lead at a time when it was difficult for the opposition to fight
back.
As far as the pitchers were concerned, Lee had his fifth win of the season on Wednesday.
He along with the recent upsurge by the Phillies as a team has improved. While he found the wins elusive to him in the beginning of the season, right now he is in a position to perform consistently.
Before Philadelphia entered into this match the experts were wondering whether they can manage to protect their recent winning streak or not.
Thanks to Lee, they have successfully kept their momentum afloat and are all set to build on it.
Lee, while discussing their chances in the season has emphasised the importance of maintaining focus and not getting carried away by the success. He hopes to see players continue stepping up the way as they have done since the start of the second half of
the season.
"If we can continue to play the way we have since the All-Star break, we have a pretty good chance," Lee said.
Despite winning the game, Phillies struggled offensively on Wednesday. Batters like Chase Utley and Ryan Howard battled hard to connect hits but they failed as they missed all their at-bats.
As the Phillies play the upcoming matches, they will be looking to earn better run-support from their offence. This is imperative in order to improve their winning percentage.
It will be interesting to see how they cope with the challenge and end the season with a better win-loss record.
