Jimmy Rollins joins the Milwaukee Brewers – MLB Update
The Milwaukee Brewers made another calculated move on Monday, December 19, to sign a deal with shortstop, Jimmy Rollins. Previously a part of the strong Philadelphia Phillies, Jimmy Rollins is expected to bring further dynamism in the already strong Brewers
offence.
The three-year contract with the player holds significance for both the player and club, as it would initially seem beyond the bounds of possibility considering the reported desire of Rollins to have a deal of four years. The Brewers have compensated that
with offering a creative fourth-year option for the shortstop. This will enable the player to get back to the Philadelphia Phillies in 2015; something that the player would indeed take as vitalising.
Doug Melvin, the Brewers general manager, said the club no longer wanted to wait anymore and want to go ahead with the deal as they had previously spoken to Alex Gonzalez and Aramis Ramirez. The move, as he put, was made to avoid losing them if the club
waited any longer.
“In the end, we just felt that it was going to drag on, and we had to make a decision,” Melvin said. “We didn't want to wait much longer because we were talking to [shortstop Alex] Gonzalez, we were talking to [third baseman Aramis] Ramirez, and their timetables
were a little bit sooner. If we wanted too long, we might lose out on them. It's all about timing.”
For Rollins himself, the move has been welcome. “There was definitely money I considered,” he said, referring to other offers. “Obviously the Phillies were going to get the last pull. I wasn't going to make a decision without letting the Phillies say, 'This
is what we have. Can we do something?”
As the Milwaukee Brewers have inducted an able shortstop in the roster, the club is undeniably in charge of a considerably good offence. With Prince Fielder seemingly looking for a new deal as he is a free-agent, and Ryan Braun’s fate yet to be known for
the 50-game suspension, the Brewers appear to be adjusting themselves for big tasks in the upcoming season.
