Jimmy Rollins sparks as Philadelphia Phillies defeat St. Louis Cardinals 10-2 – MLB Update
Philadelphia Phillies’ short-stop, Jimmy Rollins and second baseman Chase Utley both had a notable day as Rollins hit two RBIs with 1-for-4 and Utley had two RBIs with 2-for-4 in the Phillies’ 10-2 victory against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium,
St. Louis on June 21.
The pitchers were on top during the first four innings of the game as they did not give away any run by pitching in the right areas. The Cardinals’ batters missed the scoring opportunities and got out to different field areas. At the bottom of the first
inning, Jon Jay was struck-out swinging and Lance Berkman grounded out to second base.
During the third inning, Domonic Brown was grounded out to second base and Shane Victorino popped out to third base. The Cardinals’ batters opened their scoring account in the fifth inning by scoring one run and took a 1-0 lead. Ryan Theriot hit a ground
rule double to third base and Yadier Molina scored the first run while Daniel Descalso advanced to third base.
The batters did not contribute any run during the sixth inning as they were unable to play curveballs of the pitchers. The Phillies’ starter, Roy Halladay threw six innings with an ERA of 2.51 and gave only one run on four hits including one earned run.
He was able to strike-out five batters and permitted two walks on 97 pitches.
Halladay said, “Really, unless you're winning the game there, more times than not you're going to come out. Yeah, I definitely understood. It's part of the National League.”
Both teams posted two runs collectively but the Cardinals went ahead 2-1 after the seventh inning. Raul Ibanez scored the first run for the Phillies at the top of the seventh when Ross Gload singled to left-field. On the other side, Descalso hit a leading
run for the Cardinals when Schumaker hit a sacrifice fly towards centre-field.
In the eighth inning, the Phillies added nine runs to get a huge lead of 10-2. Utley, Ryan Howard, Wilson Valdez, Ben Francisco, Carlos Ruiz, Michael Martinez and Rollins each posted seven runs jointly while Victorino scored two runs to end the game. Molina
was struck-out looking and Maikel Cleto struck-out swinging in the ninth inning.
