Jimmy Walker and Tim Petrovic shine at CordeValle
The American duo of Jimmy Walker and Tim Petrovic led a late charge at the Frys.com Open for a T2 and T4 finish at CordeValle.
Both of them had started the tournament slowly with mediocre rounds, but they really stepped it up over the weekend.
Tim Petrovic shot seven-under 64 and climbed up seventeen places for a T2 finish. Petrovic has been very inconsistent with his performances this season.
He missed cut in half of the events that he has appeared in and his T2 finish at Frys.com Open is his best finish so far.
Jason Kokrak finished joint T2 with Petrovic but Jason’s performance has been steadier throughout the tournament. He shot four decent rounds of 68, 66, 67 and 68.
However, Jason, too, has been very inconsistent this season and this performance from him came as a surprise. So far, he has missed fourteen cuts out of twenty five.
Petrovic would need to pull up his socks and shoot some low rounds if he has to retain his tour card for the next season. After his T2 finish at CordeValle, he has climbed up 68 places in the money tour list and sits at 132.
"I played today like I was going to have to Monday qualify next week, and I played it like the Monday qualifier," Petrovic said.
"That was kind of my mindset when I started today. I was going to play like a one-day shootout. Throughout my career I've always done well in the Monday qualifiers, I guess because I just kind of dial in, focus. I tried to have that mentality today".
Jimmy Walker, on the other hand, equalled the course record to register a T4 finish. This is the third time in four rounds that a player has equalled the course record.
His nine-under 62 meant that he climbed up thirty six places to finish inside the top-5. The world number 104 has never won on the PGA Tour and this is his best finish in two years.
Things are certainly looking bright for Walker if he continues to play rounds like these. "I just kept hitting shots and making some putts," Walker said. "I just kept the pedal down".
