Jimmy Walker leads after first round of Shell Houston Open – Golf news
Jimmy Walker smashed a score of 9-under par 63 in the first round of the $5.9-million Shell Houston Open which is in progress at the par-72 Redstone Golf Club in Houston, Texas.
The 32-year-old American teed off from the back nine and reeled the first birdie of the tournament on the par-4 10th hole from a distance of ten feet. He tried hitting a good tee shot on the next hole, but the ball rolled into the bunker on the
left forcing the player to wedge from the bottom for a par.
The Oklahoma-born golfer fired three back-to-back birdies on the immediate holes to strengthen his position on the leaderboard and wrapped the back nine with a score of 5-under par.
He marched towards the front with the same charisma and smashed a good tee shot that left him 90 yards away from the flag. He hit a crisp iron shot on the fairway and rolled a beautiful birdie on the par-4 hole. Walker netted three more birdies in the later
holes and managed to emulate course’s lowest made by Adam Scott and Johnson Wagner in 2008.
Walker, who is bidding for his first PGA tour victory, was very happy with his putting. He said, “I putted just so good today. It was pretty amazing. I made a lot of putts. It seemed like every birdie putt kind of went in. I had one little tester for par
that went in, too. I just putted really good.”
When asked about his plans for the future, he replied that he was playing to retain his card for the current season and if he succeeded in relishing a victory, he would target the Masters next year.
Walker has stepped into the second round as the leader with an average of 23 putts per round. With a solid putting like this, Walker is strengthening his chances on his maiden victory, which will not only save his PGA card, but will also push him up in the
world rankings.
