Jimmy Walker off to a disappointing start at the Valero Texas Open – Golf News
Jimmy Walker carded a six-over par 78 in the opening round of the Valero Texas Open, at the Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio, on Thursday, April 19, 2012.
Walker’s best finish on the PGA Tour came in 2010, when he tied for the third place in the same event.
This year, he does not seem to be enjoying similar moments, as he got off to a poor start in the very first round.
He started his round on the back nine of the course and recorded a one-over par prior to the start of the front-nine.
The first nine holes witnessed him falter badly. He suffered a total of four bogeys and a double bogey against a lone birdie to sign his scorecard.
Walker took two weeks off prior to coming to San Antonio in order to make necessary preparations for the tournament. However, it seems that his preparations were not enough, and did not pay off the way he wanted them to.
According to him, he was troubled with his driving technique on the course that allowed him to hit the fairways only four times during the opening day.
“I just drove it poorly,” he said. “I wondered how I was going to hit it. I know I prepared and did everything I could do”.
Meanwhile, Kevin Na withdrew from the event after signing his scorecard with a seven-over par 79 opening round score.
He was among the favourites to win the tournament this year. However, he failed to impress his fans and left the field early in the tournament.
Yet, he succeeded in cheering his fans when he parred the ninth hole. Last year, he scored 16 on the par-four ninth after his ball was stuck in the woods.
Moreover, it was the highest score registered on any of the par-four holes in the history of the PGA Tour.
Matt Every shot the best round of the day, carding a bogey-free nine-under par 63 to take the lead while breaking the course record at the Oaks Course.
Previously, the record was held by Ryan Palmer and Scott Piercy, as both the players scored 64 in the 2010 edition of the tournament.
