Jimmy Walker remains consistent at the AT&T National
Jimmy Walker carded a bogey-free two-under par 69 in the second round of the AT&T National to share the second spot, at the Congressional Country Club, on Friday, June 29, 2012.
Walker got off to a confident start on the back nine of the course and recorded a birdie on the first hole (10th) that he played. Through six holes, he was two-under for the round, as he managed to drain another birdie putt on the 15th hole.
Thereafter, he lost some pace and parred each of the remaining 12 holes of the day to settle two strokes behind the pace set by Hunter Mahan, who posted a seven-under par 135 two-round score.
According to him, he did not hit the ball well throughout the day and in turn, missed some fairways. Yet, he managed to save pars on each of the hole that saw him struggle to reach the pins.
“I didn't quite hit it as good today as I did yesterday but got a lot out of the round, got pretty much everything out of the round I could have gotten out of it, lots of good up and downs, lots of good putts,” he said, while talking to the PGA Tour website.
“I played steady around the back, and then on the front nine, just a little, just missed some fairways by 10 feet”.
He stated that the course was pretty challenging and making pars along with few birdies might be counted as a good round.
“There's not going to be a bunch of birdies, so I think pars are at a premium,” he said. “And then when you do hit a good shot in there, you need to capitalize”.
Overall, it was a good score posted by Walker, as it was not a low scoring day and most of the players struggled to save pars throughout the round. He now finds himself in a very good position to challenge his rivals in the final two rounds.
Brendon de Jonge and Robert Garrigus were the other two players who joined him on the leaderboard, following two-under par and four-under par scores, respectively.
