Jimmy Wang breezes past Greg Ouellette into the main round – Hall of Fame Championships 2011
Taiwanese Jimmy Wang, ranked 491st in the world, thrashed world number 308 Greg Ouellette of USA in straight sets in the final round of the qualifying draw at the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in Newport
on Monday. The Taiwanese dropped just four games and won a one-sided contest 6-2, 6-2 in just an hour and three minutes.
Wang broke the American in the opening game of the first set and consolidated on it to take a 2-0 lead. The Taiwanese and Ouellette held their serve in the next four games to take the score to 4-2 in favour of the former. The right-handed
broke his opponent again in the ninth game and served out the set at 5-4.
The Taiwanese hit 54 percent of the first serves and a single ace in the opening set. Wang converted 64 percent of the first serves and 83 percent of the second serves into points in the first set. On the other hand, Ouellette
managed to deliver just 48 percent of the first serves and claimed 53 percent of the points on them. The American grabbed 36 percent of the first return points in the opening set. Wang returned better than his opponent, sealing a whopping 47 percent of the
first return points in the first set. The Taiwanese won two of the five break points he received on Ouellette’s serve and saved the only break point he faced on his own serve in the opening set.
After losing the first ser miserably, Ouellette had a good start to the second set as he claimed first two games, breaking Wang in the second game and taking a 2-0 lead. After that, it was all Wang show as the Taiwanese broke the
American thrice, capturing six consecutive games to win the set 6-2.
Wang had a satisfactory first serve percentage, hitting 61 percent of the first serves in the second set. The Taiwanese won 73 percent of the first service points and delivered a single ace in the second set. In comparison, Ouellette
had a poor conversion rate as the American clinched just 42 percent of the first service points and a meagre 25 percent of the second service points. Wang capitalised on all the three break point opportunities he created on the American’s serve but failed
to save the only break point he faced on his own serve in the second set.
The five feet and ten inches tall will meet third seed Igor Kunitsyn of Russia in the first round of the main draw.
