Jimmy Wang dismisses Riccardo Ghedin to enter round two – Proton Malaysian Open 2012
Taiwanese wild card recipient, Jimmy Wang, got the better of the Italian qualifier, Riccardo Ghedin, in straight sets at the Proton Malaysian Open 2012 on Monday. He nudged up a 6-3, 6-3 success against the 26-year-old to secure a spot in the second round
at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 series event held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The Saudi Arabian-born Wang showed awe-inspiring skills and agility to outmuscle Ghedin in almost one and a half hour. As a result, Wang took lead in the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head Series by 1-0 against the world number 277 and progressed into the round of 16
at this indoor hard court event.
Wang thundered into the Putra Indoor Stadium in Bukit Jalil. He unleashed barrage of groundstrokes to wind up five games in a row before the Italian could come on the score sheet. Apart from losing his serve in the seventh game, the Taiwanese plucked his
serve once again and clicked the opener with a 6-3 success. He failed to fend off the lone breakpoint he encountered but converted two out of five break opportunities to his advantage.
Ranked 151st in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Wang kept momentum sailing into the second set. He got the desiderated break in the fifth game and jumped to a 4-2 lead. The Taiwanese held his remaining serves with poise and
cashed in another break chance in the last game, eventually sealing the set by winning six games to three. He superbly blocked both breakpoints he faced to keep his entire serves. Wang capitalised on two out of four break chances to steal the spotlight.
Overall, the 27-year-old fired nine ferocious aces to dominate in the battle. He produced a slightly lower first serve share of 69 per cent as compared to the Italian’s 70 per cent but impressively availed 27 out of 41 pints on it. Wang sought nine break
opportunities and finished the match with 71 points.
Next in queue for Wang is the second seed, Juan Monaco from Argentina, who received a first round bye after being a top four player at this event.
