Jimmy Wang downs Laurynas Grigelis in second qualifier round - Hall of Fame Championships 2011
Sixth seed Laurynas Grigelis of Lithuania crashed out of the second round of qualifying rounds of the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships, at the hands of Jimmy Wang of Chinese Taipei at the International Tennis Hall of
Fame in Newport, Rhode Island, United States.
In the contest being played on Sunday, Wang took one hour and fifty minutes play to wrap up the contest at 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, to make it into the final round of the qualifying draws. He took hold of the opener early to get one up in
the contest but Grigelis made a tremendous recovery to level the matchup at one set a piece. Wang then turned the tide once again in the final set to oust the Lithuanian from the competition and moved one step further to the main draws of the ATP (Association
of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 event.
Wang’s serve proved to be the critical success factor for him in the matchup, as he delivered 70 per cent of it on target, while conceding just one double fault. His agility on court was phenomenal and he traced the occasional
drop shots from his opponent with great anticipation, converting them in to elegant cross-court winners.
The Taiwanese proved a bit sloppy in converting his break opportunities during the match, as he squandered away 11 out of 15 chances, converting just four of them en route to victory. Grigelis struck break points three out of six
times in the match, yet finishing on the losing side in the end.
Wang was very quick to take off in the opener and stung a serve break early to bring his opponent under pressure. The sixth seeded Lithuanian retaliated with an immediate break point conversion to level the scores once again at
3-3, only to be broken in the very next game to trail 5-3. Grigelis held serve once more before Wang comprehensively served out of the first set at 6-4 to get one up in the contest.
A magnificent comeback from Grigelis in the following set stunned everyone present at Newport, as the sixth seed raced through the set to reach 6-2, levelling the competition at 1-1. Grigelis failed to sustain his momentum in the
final set and dropped his serve twice before Wang delivered the final blow to seal victory at 6-2.
Wang will take on the fourth seed American opponent, Greg Ouellette, on Monday to qualify for the main draws of the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships.
