Jimmy White hails Stephen Hendry for his contribution to snooker: 2012 World Snooker Championship
After providing the fans 27 years of outstanding snooker display, the veteran and former seven-time World Snooker Championship winner, Scotland’s Stephen Hendry has finally decided to move on. The legendary potter had announced his retirement from the snooker
world after the finish of his quarter-final clash of the 2012 World Snooker Championship against Stephen Maguire at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield.
Hendry’s decision was sudden which surprised everyone. However, the snooker fans as well as the top guns of snooker are feeling happy for him. The former six-time World Snooker Championship finalist, England’s Jimmy White has hailed the Ice Man for his matchless
contribution to the sport throughout his professional career that comprises 27 years.
The People’s Champion wrote on Twitter, “He was and is an unbelievable snooker player & has nothing to prove. I hope he enjoys his retirement he really deserves it! He's always put snooker first, been a model professional, credit to the game and I'll see
him in the legends tour this year for more battles.”
The Whirlwind added, “I thank him sincerely for some of the best matches and memories of my own career. I'm not sure his records will ever be equalled!”
White faced Hendry four times in the final encounter of World Championship but lost to him every time. The Englishman believes Hendry is an asset of the sport and he must be regarded accordingly.
Meanwhile, the former World Snooker Champion, England’s Shaun Murphy also paid tribute to the living legend and wrote on his Twitter account, “Most successful snooker player of all time, Stephen Hendry retires. Can't believe it.”
Hendry was up against Maguire in the quarter-final encounter and faced a brutal defeat by the score line of 2-13. He was in a regular post match press conference where he announced his retirement from World Snooker. According to the veteran, he was planning
for the retirement for the past three months.
Hendry achieved another mile-stone before he left the game. He equalised the record of maximum 147 breaks with that of Ronnie O’Sullivan after firing his 11th maximum clearance against the 2011 Australian Goldfields Open winner, England’s Stuart
Bingham in the opening round of the mega event.
