Jiri Hudler’s goal in shootout gives Detroit Red Wings victory against Dallas Stars 3-2 -NHL Recap
A low-scoring game stayed the same in the shootout as well as Detroit Red Wings got one goal against the opponent’s zero in the final round to edge past Dallas Stars, 3-2, on Tuesday, January 17, 2012, at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, United
States.
Jiri Hudler was the star of the night for the Red Wings as hee scored an equaliser in regulation and beat goalie, Richard Bachman, in the shootout to give his team a victory.
In the first period, Stars’ goalie, Richard Bachman, moved to the back of his net to retrieve the puck, but his opponent got it first and flicked a pass to Tomas Holmstrom, who beat Bachman to score his eighth goal of the National Hockey League (NHL) 2011-2012
regular season.
At 10:30, Detroit’s Ian White was penalised for two minutes for interfering Michael Ryder.
During the power-play, Alex Goligoski sent a pass to Brenden Morrow, who tipped the puck into the net to level the score.
After around five minutes, the Stars got the lead.
Sheldon Souray’s shot was stopped by Detroit’s goalie, Ty Conklin. T
he puck then rebounded off the goalie and Loui Eriksson backhanded it into the net, taking the score to 2-1.
The Red Wings managed to provide an equaliser in the second period.
At 1:43, when Jiri Hudler was present in the right red circle in the opponent’s zone, he collected the puck and hit it hard into the net brining things back to square one.
No scoring move could be made for the rest of the period.
Both the goalies played well in the third period and successfully prevented their respective nets, forcing the game to overtime.
After the goalless overtime, the game went into a shootout where each team got three shots.
The Red Wings got the first chance to hit the puck and Pavel Datsyuk missed his target.
Loui Eriksson came in for the Stars, but he too could not score as his shot was saved by Conklin.
Hudler was next.
He skated through the rink and faked a hit. In an anticipation to receive the puck, Bachman moved to his right, leaving the rest of the net uncovered. The dodge worked out for Hudler, who easily sent the puck into the net after deceiving the goalie.
"It's always nice when you score on a move like this", Hudler said.
"I faked a shot, the puck stopped for a little second, and then there was an open net there. I thought he got the puck, but he didn't expect that. I was lucky".
Ryder was the Stars’ next shooter. His shot was also saved by Conklin.
Bachman saved the next shot, providing an opportunity to his team to score the next goal and extend the shootout period.
However, Trevor Daley missed the next hit and the game was awarded to the Red Wings.
"You don't want to give up points, especially in your own building, but I have to judge everything by work ethic", Stars’ coach, Glen Gulutzan, said.
"And if you look at these two nights, we put in the work. When you put in those efforts, you have to get the points".
The Red Wings are now going to take on Phoenix Coyotes on Thursday, while the Stars face Tampa Bay Lightning on Friday.
