Jiri Vesely ousts Alexios Halebian to reach the Boys' Singles last four – US Open 2011
No real trouble for the top seed Czech, Jiri Vesely, as he disposed of the unseeded local boy, Alexios Halebian, in the quarter-final clash of the US Open Boys’ Singles on Friday afternoon.
Vesely wrapped up a comprehensive straight sets victory at 7-5, 6-2, to make it to the semi-finals of the last Grand Slam tournament of the year in style. Halebian hung in the contest for merely one hour and fifteen minutes before
succumbing to the belligerent top seed in the second set of the matchup to let him into the final-four.
The contest was played on the Court 11 of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows Park, of Queens, New York City, United States, with a dismaying end, as the American contest suffered a heavy defeat
at the hands of the top seed.
Vesely delivered 60 per cent of his serve on target and amazingly secured 24 out of 28 first serve points en route to victory. Halebian closely followed him with 21 out of 32 points but failed to collect the crucial points in the
game. The American cashed in just one of his three break points in the matchup and suffered a total of four cracking serve breaks from his opponent to finish on the losing side.
A competitive opener was played between the two teenagers, with Vesely breaking early in the third game to lead 3-1. Halebian backfired at his opponent in the eighth game, breaking the Czech serve to level the scores at 4-4. It
appeared as if the opener was heading towards a tie breaker round but a crucial serve break from Vesely in the 11th game turned the course of the game. The top seed served out of the first set at 7-5, getting the upper hand in the contest.
Vesely continued with his demolition job with greater intensity in the following set and gave absolutely no chance to the American opponent to make his way back in the game. The Czech broke early once again to lead 3-1 and then
went on to register his fourth serve break of the day in the seventh game to reach 5-2. Vesely served out of the match in an assertive manner, finishing off the contest at 6-2 to get through to the semi-final round of the US Open Boys’ Singles.
Up next for Vesely in the semis is the unseeded Briton, Kyle Edmund, who defeated Karim Hossam of Egypt to make it to the round of four.
