What are the differences? Is Brazilian a modified form of Jiu Jitsu? Are there other modified forms? Does anyone have a site that determines the differences, similarities, & history of both, & perhaps even ranks & belts? Thanks.

  1. Jujitsu is Japanese and Brazilian Jujitsu is Brazilian. They have nothing in common. Brazilian Jujitsu came from Kodokan Judo and is not a modified form of Jujitsu.

  2. big foot pretty much sumed it all up. so basically just go learn judo.

  3. JuJitsu was the original art, Jigoro Kano studied JuJitsu and devised his own devistating techniques to create Judo, which was still known as JuJitsu in Japan but was diferent to most traditional schools because it focused on long throwing techniques and randori (free sparing)

BJJ started when Mitsuyo Maeda taught Judo to the Gracie family, Heilo Gracie was a very small guy and was an asthmetic, and had little luck with the throing techniques so he decided to concentrate on the ground game, polishing and devising new techniques that relied very little on any physical strength, the rest is history, BJJ took off from there and becaome popular through the challenges and then through the UFC

There are many modified forms of JuJitsu, even JuJitsu schools are all different some teaching very formal training, others concentrating on free fighting, and others concentrating on the ground like BJJ.  Aikido is also a JuJitsu off-shoot and there are many "JuJitsu" techniques in karate as well

  4. Well gee .... if Bazilian Jujitsu came from  Kodokan Judo then Brazlian jujitsu is founded on Japanese jujitsu.  http://www.westlord.com/jujitsu/eng-hist... for facts about Kodokan Judo therefore Brazlilian jiujujitsu sprang from the likes of Nihon koryu jujutsu..... just a plain and simple fact.
