Alright, Im lookin' for a hobby in the summer, Im a little on the slimmer side, but I wanted to try a form of martial arts, or fighting, I love UFC ( not saying that I'm doing this because I'm going to be the next hardcore fighter) I just wanted to try it out, Im really flexible, and I love the submissions in the fights, What preparations should I go through to make sure Im gunna be ready for this, also could someone give me another fighting style they can suit to my attributes? Im 16- about 5'7, 5'8.. I dont exactly know my weight, but Im pretty skinny.

  1. stretch

    increase your flexibility

my sensei teaching me MMA was amazed the other day when i basically invented a submission (i'm sure someone has done it before me so im not taking credit but hes never seen it before)

and no one else in the class or the advanced class can do it cause im the most flexible

cardio also, your gunna wanna increase this as best you can

the muscle and everything, you will find out about

but going in able to bend and flex your body specially for submission fighting, and your cardio pretty decent you will be fine

  2. Jiu jitsu is always a good thing to get into, no matter how skinny you are. It will definitely get you in shape, and it is very practical for self defense considering that most fights in a street setting end up going to the ground.  Other than that, maybe work on some wrestling, and do some weight training if you're worried about being to thin.  Also, I think that dude in the video you posted is doing capoeira, it's some weird brazilian break dance martial art, haha.

  3. i believe u r ready they will show u wen u get there other stuff u need 2 no also practice grappling it is used all the time in jiu jitsu

  4. once you start you will be using muscles you have never strengthened before.

you cant really prepare for that,  just start eating healthy so your cardio and recovery will be there and like the guy up there said...  flexibility.

  5. just jump in head first, the senseis will prepare you, they'll teach you step by step and wont expect anything special from you, so just relax an have fun, that my view of it when people come to the club i work in.

  6. It's a great sport for small or big guys and it's the gateway to more martial arts experience.....all MMA fighters know basic jiu jitsu....but be carefull arm bars hurt, knee bars and heel hooks hurt too...if you don't have some pain tolerance then don't attempt this activity.....all in all 90% of fights end up on the ground so this would probably be usefull in real life as opposed to a strike oriented style....have a good time with whatever you choose

  7. Contrary to what Griffin stated, it has never been proven that the majority of fights go to the ground where both people are still able to continue. Yes a lto do, but a high % of them are two drunk guys who can't stand up, or somebody getting clocked and not being able to defend themselves. I asked a question for proof of this and no one was able to give me a statistical study.

What this stems from is a police report on altercations with suspects. The actual figure was like 60%, but realize these involve police who must do the minimum amount of damage to suspects when apprehending them. This figure was distorted by the Gracie's to premote BJJ. I am not saying it doesn't work, but I'll give you another statistic "100% of fightsstart out standing up". This statement is much more accurate.

If you are interested in fighting UFC style then you will definetly need to learn to ground fight. You don't say whether it is BJJ or Japanes Ju Jitsu that you want to take. ANY martial art can be benificial if you are taught right and train right. I say go for it and have fun.

As for the link there is no doubt that what they are doing is called "tricking" and it is done in extreme martial arts, which is not really a martial art at all, just gymnastics with some punches and kicks thrown in. It has no serious application in a real fight or self defense situation, and is only a way to show off.
