Jiyai Shin bags another Women’s British Open title
Jiyai Shin added another Women’s British Open title to her name when she steamrolled over her opponents with a nine-shot victory in the 2012 version of the championship on Sunday.
Shin, a South Korean golfer, dominated the Royal Liverpool Golf Club fairways like a true champion. As there were high winds on Friday, the schedule of the tournament was altered and two rounds were set to be played on the last day of the championship.
Shin led the way as she came out on the final day, with a five-shot advantage. She continued with her run for the title.
Australian professional golfer Karrie Webb showed some positive signs on the last day and made life difficult for the South Korean. Webb narrowed Shin’s lead to three shots.
Asian golfers have been dominating the ladies circuit for a long time now. The 2012 season was a perfect showcase of such an example.
This is not the case in men’s golf where the only success story was when YE Yang, a Korea-based golfer, won the 2009 United States Professional Golf Association title.
During the Women’s British Open, Webb tried her best to shorten the South Korean's lead but could not do so because Shin was showing a top-class game.
In her statement, Shin said, "It was a long, long, very tough day and I just focused on each single shot,Before I thought my skill was not good for links, but finally I have great tempo in my swing and I think this course was made for me. I had great confidence
and I have great memories of this tournament".
It was the second day of the tournament when Shin surged to the top of the leaderboard. She carded an eight-under 64 to extend her lead.
Shin played a spectacular tournament to take away the winner’s cheque, her determination and commitment on the fairways was quite visible.
South Korea has been coming up with some excellent golfers, although it is not a similar success story on the men’s tour. However, as far as the women golfers are concerned, Korea has dominated the Tour.
With more than sixty Asian golfers in the top hundred ranking, the European counterparts find it difficult to contend on the Tour.
Although new American and European golfers are coming up and showing promise, to make a mark on the Tour, they will have to come up with the same level of play as the Asians.
