Jiyai Shin dominates leaderboard in the first round of Kingsmill Championship
South Korean Jiyai Shin shot a massive 9-under 62 in the first round of Kingsmill Championship at Williamsburg, Virginia, grabbing an early lead. However, the match had to be suspended due to darkness.
The Kingsmill Championship is featuring a rich field full of top-ranked LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) contenders, but there were still many players who could not finish their first round due to darkness.
Shin, who has been seeking to win an event since her last triumph at the Mizuno Classic in November 2010, kicked off the opening round at Williamsburg in an impressive style.
She capitalised on the good conditions in the morning sun. The South Korean star made balanced strokes on almost all the holes she played.
Other contenders who performed well on the first day of Kingsmill Championship included Dewi Claire Schreefel.
Schreefel got off to a very good start as she posted a seven-under par and completed her 16th hole, but the match had to be suspended due to bad light.
American Paula Creamer looked confident on the course on Thursday, as she carded a 65 to tie for the third position along with Maria Hjorth of Sweden, Spanish Azahara Munoz and Beatriz Recari who also shot a 65 each.
Commentators said that the course is good, which helped players post a good score early in the tournament.
They said that, due to suspension of play after bad light, it is hard to predict who is going to dominate the leaderboard in the next three rounds. However, players will try to atone for the lapses they made in the opening round.
Shin’s performance was almost perfect on Thursday as she held her nerve, shooting nine birdies and no bogey.
Speaking to the media about a stunning start, the South Korean golfer said that her game was “very impressive” and she will try to keep that momentum going in the next three rounds.
“Actually, finally I can say golf is not too hard, not only for today, but today was not too hard for me. When I started this morning, it was a little wind,” Shin shared her thoughts.
“I just keep focused for just saved a play, safe to fairway and saved a green, but first couple when I made a birdie, so after that I get okay, I feel good today, so let's play a little bit aggressive”.
