Jiyai Shin off to a flying start at Hoylake
South Korean Jiyai Shin got off to a stunning start in the Ricoh Women’s British Open 2012 as she carded a 71 in the opening round to tie for the third position along with 9 other contenders.
Shin, whose performance has been solid in the current season as she recently won the Kingsmill Championship 2012, looked in a great form as she carded three birdies and two bogeys on Thursday.
The South Korean star started her round in grand style as she posted her first birdie on the par-4 third, after parring the first two holes. She parred the fourth and fifth, but lost momentum on the difficult par-3 sixth as she ended up recording a bogey.
On the back nine, Shin’s performance improved and she looked extra careful when it came to the putting greens. Full of confidence, she sank a birdie-putt on the par-5 10th, boosting her score on the leaderboard.
Commentators said that the South Korean golfer is keen to make another breakthrough this season after her flawless performance at the Kingsmill Championship 2012.
Shin has been a prominent player on the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) as she has racked up nine titles so far. In addition to proving her mettle on the LPGA Tour, the 24-yar-old star boasts 21 victories on the LPGA of Korean Tour.
Speaking to the media at the end of the opening round, Shin said that she is quite satisfied with her performance on Thursday and will try to keep that momentum going in the next three rounds.
She said that the reason behind her aggressive game was calm weather conditions. Shin said that since the wind has calmed now, players will want to post much bigger scores on Friday and Saturday.
“Actually I think today is lucky because the weather was great and then the wind was just a breeze.  It's just like a little bit strong but the local people say it's just breeze,” Shin said.
The LPGA titan went on to say that the course is good — but some holes are tricky.  “The course is really tough.  It's very tight and then the greens are very small.  Great, every shot, driver, putter.  So I'm really happy with my score today.  I made the two bogeys”.
