Jiyai Shin rises to 10th position in world rankings
South Korean Jiyai Shin has risen to the 10th position in the Women’s World Golf Rankings, thanks largely to her two consecutive Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) victories this season.
Shin, who has now emerged as a fast-learning contender on the LPGA Tour, was not ranked among hot favourites a few weeks back, however, her back-to-back victories at the Kingsmill Championship and Ricoh Women’s
British Open 2012 have helped her find a spot in the top 10.
The current season has been momentous for the 24-year-old. Her victory at the Kingsmill Championship came amid concerns over slumping performance of the current world number one Yani Tseng. But, the South Korean
star has been too quick to capitalise on the opportunities given to her during the season.
Kingsmill was the scene of relentless battle among top-ranked LPGA stars, but the endgame was all about Shin and American Paula Creamer. Creamer, despite having enough support from the local fans and spectators,
could not stand her ground and lost the title to Shin in playoff.
Then the latest major championship — Ricoh Women’s British Open 2012 — came with plenty of surprises. Although the line-up at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club was stronger than ever before, Shin made an all-out
effort to remain in the contention.
As injuries have always been part of golf, Shin also had to spend a few weeks back at home recently due to an in injury in her arms and shoulders.
“I had a hand operation, but it takes all my left arm and shoulders and all my left side makes it weak.  So I worked really hard just my balance programme and then actually, I lost a lot of power in my left
arms and shoulders.  So less pain, but every day I went to the hospital for the recovery,” she spoke while speaking during the Ricoh Women’s British Open 2012.
Overall, the fiery South Korean has put together quite a stunning career, notching a total of 36 professional victories that include 10 on the LPGA Tour and two major championships.
In addition to proving her mettle on the LPGA Tour and big stage, Shin has also made a name for herself on regional Tours. She has racked up five titles on the LPGA of Japan Tour and twenty-one on the LPGA
of Korea Tour.
