Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie of Team Jolly clinch 2012 New Zealand 470 National Championship
One of the top sailing pair in New Zealand women sailing, Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie of Jolly Team displayed impressive sailing skills at the Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat Club to hit the top spot in the overall standings of 2012 New Zealand 470 National Championship
and claim the national title. The event produces some of the best sailing shows ever at the TYPBC featuring seven top 470 sailing teams of the country.
The Jolly team pair was consistent on the TYPBC waters and maintained their overall lead after they grabbed it at the conclusion of second day’s proceedings. The duo was not able to perform according to the standards on the first day but they got their momentum
at the start of Day 2 to finally come up on first position.
The seven-boat 470 fleet began their proceedings inside the harbour towards a clockwise tidal flow. The weather conditions were a bit rough on the first day as unseasonal cold rain surrounded the race course on Day 1. A moderate north easterly breeze blew
over the racing area. Team Jolly could not sail properly on the first day and compiled low scores.
However, they bounced back into the event on Day 2 and taking advantage of the fast blowing breeze, the pair hit the top spot with a couple of bullets. Aleh and Powrie continued their dominance on the third day too and won all races of third day to retain
their top position and eventually win the championship with 12 points after eight races including one discard.
Overall standings at the end of the championship are given below:
1. Jo Aleh, Polly Powrie RNZYS, Takapun 3 (4) 1 4 1 1 1 1 = 12 points
2. Luke Stevenson, Sam Bullock TYPBC 2 1 (5) 1 2 5 4 3 = 18 points
