Jo-Mari Van Zyl dominates the women’s 50m freestyle heat at the South Africa Age Group Championships
Jo-Mari Van Zyl displayed a masterpiece of her performance to dominate the women’s 50m freestyle heats at the South Africa Age Group Championships on Monday. The 17-year-old Van Zyl had a stylish win coupled with her beautiful strokes in a time of 27.47.
She was in a neck-to-neck race with Suanne De Wet and Robyn Sher but managed to take a slight lead in the last 15 metres of the race. De Wet touched the wall in a time of 27.57 followed by Sher, who came home in 27.61 seconds.
Then the qualifying rounds for the 16-year-olds began, where the 50m butterfly winner Vanessa Mohr qualified as the fastest freestyle swimmer in her age group, registering a time of 27.15 seconds that was comfortably ahead of the second fastest Kristy Muller’s
27.20 seconds. While, the silver medallist for the 50m butterfly, Kayla Ferreira followed them for the third spot in a time of 27.75 seconds.
On a lower level, 15-year-old Marne Erasmus dominated the 50m freestyle swim in a time of 27.24 in her age group. The race went tough, as first five swimmers touched the wall in less than 28.00 and the remaining five in less than 29.00 seconds. Michaela
Barnes qualified as the second fastest in a time of 27.58 ahead of Tammy Price, who qualified as third fastest in 27.86 seconds.
In the group of 14-year-olds, Marizen Marais qualified as the fastest swimmer in a time of 27.89 seconds slightly ahead of Kyna Pereira and Emma Chelius, who clocked a time of 27.91 and 28.07 respectively. In the 13-year-olds competition, Jamie Reynolds
emerged as the fastest female swimmer, clocking a time of 28.48 against Caitlin Crow and Rita Naude, who finished second and third in a time of 28.71 and 28.96 respectively.
Whereas, in the youngest age group of 12-year-olds, Erin Gallagher stunned the arena by clocking the 28.78 seconds to qualify as the fastest freestyle swimmer for today’s final. She was the only one who timed less than 29.00 and was followed by Caitlin Bosma
and Linda Groenewald in a time of 29.43 and 29.66 respectively.
