Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Fabio Fognini advance to the round of 32 – French Open 2011
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga downs Igor Andreev 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-3
World number 17, French Jo-Wilfried Tsonga prevailed over world number 92 Igor Andreev of Russia in straight sets 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-3 in the second round of French Open at Roland Garros on Wednesday. Tsonga took two hours and 36 minutes to undo his opponent.
Tsonga needed a single break of serve in the first set to grab it 6-3. The French delivered three aces and 50 percent of the first serves in the opening set, bagging 82 percent of the points on them. On the other hand, Andreev kept his first serve percentage at 67 percent, clinching 79 percent of the points on them. Tsonga hit eleven winners and twelve unforced errors compared to just three winners and six unforced errors by Andreev. The French converted 33 percent of the service returns into points in the first set.  The six feet and two inches tall capitalized on the only break point opportunity he created and saved all the three break points on his own serve in the opening set.
Tsonga and Andreev exchanged a couple of breaks of serve in the first six games of the second set, taking it to a tie-break. The French grabbed two mini-breaks in the tie-break, sealing it 7-4.
The right-handed broke the Russian in the sixth game of the third set and capitalised on it to capture the set 6-3. Tsonga fired four aces and six winners in the third set.
The French will play fourteenth seed Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland in the third round.
Fabio Fognini beats Stephane Robert 6-2, 6-1, 6-0
Italian Fabio Fognini, ranked 49th in the world, crushed world number 140 Stephane Robert of France in straight sets to proceed to the second round. The Italian dropped just three games in the entire match, beating his opponent 6-2, 6-1, 6-0 in only an hour and nine minutes.
Fognini broke Robert twice in the first set, claiming it 6-2. The Italian delivered 74 percent of the first serves in the opening set, converting an amazing 93 percent of them into points. The 24-year-old bulldozed his opponent with thirteen winners in the first set.
The Italian dropped just a single game in the second set, breaking Robert in the second and sixth game to win the set 6-1. Fognini converted two of the five break point chances he created on Robert’s serve in the second set.
The five feet and ten inches tall was almost flawless in the third set as he did not allow the French to grab even a single game, winning the set 6-0 in just 20 minutes. The right-handed won an incredible 71 percent of the receiving points in the third set.
Fognini will face world number 33 Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain in the round of 32.
