Jo-Wilfried Tsonga beats Michael Llodra 4-3 Retd.
World number 19 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France moved to the quarterfinals after his compatriot Michael Llodra, ranked 25th in the world, retired due to an upper leg injury in the third round of AEGON Championships at the
Queen’s Club in London on Thursday. Llodra was trailing 3-4 when he decided to discontinue the match after 23 minutes of play.
Tsonga and Llodra held their serve in the first seven games of the opening set and took the score to 4-3 in favour of the former. At this moment, Llodra forfeited the match due to pain in his leg.
During these seven games, Tsonga delivered two aces and 83 percent of the first serves, capturing 84 percent of the points on them. On the other hand, Llodra hit 73 percent of the first deliveries and bagged a whopping 91 percent
of the points on them.
Tsonga crushed world number 79 Michael Berrer of Germany in straight sets 6-0, 6-1 in the second round.
The French is slated to meet top seed Rafael Nadal of Spain in the quarterfinals. The Spaniard overpowered Radek Stepanek in three sets 6-3, 5-7, 6-1 in the third round.
Marin Cilic defeats Thomaz Bellucci 7-6(3), 0-6, 6-3
Croatian Marin Cilic, ranked 27th in the world, fought back after the second set drubbing to oust world number 30 Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil in three sets 7-6(3), 0-6, 6-3 in the third round. It took the Croatian one
hour and 53 minutes to undo his opponent in a tough match.
Cilic broke the Brazilian in the seventh game of the first set and held his next service game to take a 5-3 lead. Bellucci broke back in the tenth game to square off the score at 5-5. Cilic and Bellucci held their serve in the
next two games, taking the set to a tiebreak. The Croatian dominated the tie-break, winning it 7-3.
Staging a comeback in the second set, Bellucci broke his opponent three times, claiming six consecutive games to grab the set 6-0. The Brazilian was helped by his opponent’s poor serving in the second set. Cilic committed four
double faults and delivered a meagre 45 percent of the first serves, sealing just 56 percent of the points on them. Bellucci won three of the six break points he received in the second set.
After getting crushed in the second set, Cilic fought back as he regained his composure in the deciding set. The Croatian broke Bellucci in the fourth game and consolidated on it to take a 4-1 lead. The six feet and six inches
tall served out the set in the ninth game, clinching it 6-3.
Cilic will face second seed Andy Murray of Great Britain in the quarterfinals. The Brit defeated Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia in straight sets 6-4, 7-6(3) in the round of 16.
