Jo-Wilfried Tsonga aims to break a Grand Slam duck in 2013 – Tennis News
Despite of a strong statement created by the Top-4 athletes, who won four Major titles in 2012, world number eight, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, considers himself as a contender for a Grand Slam title in the upcoming season. He is probably
the fittest in the squad but he has this ability to slowdown which allows the superior ranked players to dictate terms during a contest have led to his downfall.
In an interview, Tsonga said, “We are in a state of tennis where the field is extremely deep in terms of talent and winning against one, two or three of the guys in the top four in any given tournament is a challenge.”
Adding about the contention for a Grand Slam title, he confessed, “Winning a grand slam is possible but I need to be on top of my game. Today I believe in my chances as I have proven that I could beat any of these great players
at a grand slam.”
Tsonga will team up with Mathilde Johansson to represent France at the Hopman Cup, hosted in Perth next year. It will be a great opportunity for the 27-year-old superstar to warm-up his body just before the commencement of the
first Grand Slam event of the season, the Australian Open. Commenting about that, Tsonga said, “I felt that the Hopman Cup was a good compromise between training and competition and, with my coach being in Australia; it even made more sense to be there.”
Recently, the Frenchman has joined hands with the Roger Rasheed who is the former coach of the Aussie tennis ace, Lleyton Hewitt. The first test for the new trainer will began at the Hopman Cup where Tsonga will look to defy the
odds and carry the flag of his nation into the advanced stages and help himself to gain some momentum before he steps at the hard courts of Rod Laver Arena.
Tsonga reached four finals of the Association of Tennis Professionals Tours. He won at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open and Moselle Open but failed to win at the China Open as well as If Stockholm Open. He was ranked world number five
in June 2012 but dropped to the eighth spot after a terrible show at the Barclays Association of Tennis Professionals World Tour Finals.
