Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Richard Gasquet lead the field in Sydney – Tennis News
French stars, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Richard Gasquet, are the top two seeds at the Apia International Sydney 2013, an ATP World Tour 250 Series event taking place in Sydney, Australia.
Some of the top tennis stars are lining up for the field at this Australian Open warm-up tournament. The French number one Tsonga and the world number 10 Gasquet are the two stars participating amongst the Top 10.
Ranked eighth in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Tsonga claimed two titles and secured two final berths in his 2012 campaign. He captured the Qatar ExxonMobil Open in January by overpowering Gael Monfils and the Moselle Open in Metz by dumping Andreas Seppi.
The 26-year-old on the other hand grabbed a single title in 2012 season. He cruised past his rivals and eventually shelved the title at the PTT Thailand Open. Gasquet also made two final appearances and reached far in several events.
Other contestants include the new Australian number one Marinko Matosevic, the American number one John Isner and the former world number seven Fernando Verdasco.
The world number 49, Matosevic reflected about his participation in a press conference, “The tournament always attracts a really strong field and this time is no different with players like Tsonga and Gasquet competing in Sydney. I’m looking forward to competing well there and trying to get as many matches under my belt before the Australian Open.”
Other French contenders include the 2011 champion Gilles Simon, last year’s runner-up Julien Benneteau and Jeremy Chardy.
The tournament’s official, Craig Watson, is looking forward for this event which has attracted several top stars from both men and women’s circuit. Seven of the Top 10 women are lining up for the women’s draw at the Apia International Sydney. Watson reflected, “We are bringing together an incredible group of players to compete in Sydney next month. We are thrilled to have nine Top 10 players, Australia’s No.1 male and female and Grand Slam champions in the outstanding field.”
Other top tennis stars in the men’s draw includes Andreas Seppi from Italy, German star Florian Mayer, Czech veteran Radek Stepanek and the Spanish star Marcel Granollers.
