Jo-Wilfried Tsonga demolishes Ze Zhang in second round – China Open 2011
Top seed Jo Wilfried Tsonga of France eased past Chinese tennis pro Zhe Zhang 6-3, 6-4 on Thursday to book his place in quarterfinals of 2011 China Open here at the National Tennis Center in Beijing, China.
Tsonga looked in supreme touch in the pre-quarterfinal match that lasted for only 1 hour and sixteen minutes on the hard courts of Beijing. Playing very aggressive tennis throughout the contest, Tsonga smashed his big forehand
and backhand winners all over the court. Hitting 8 serves aces, he was able to hit his way out of trouble whenever he needed to. Besides his superb attacking abilities, he had a rock solid defence as well, which let him saved three out of break points.
Looking for a place in quarterfinal of the tournament, Tsonga had a very bright start to the match. Holding on to his first four service games comfortably, he served with control and deadly accuracy. Making his first serve break
of the match, he dented his opponent’s confidence levels to take a tricky 5-3 lead, serving for the set. Clinching four straight points on his next service game, he bagged the set to take 1-0 set score lead.
The second set followed a pretty similar trend as Tsonga continued to pressurise his opponent with some high quality tennis. Breaking the challenger twice more, he raced to an impassable 5-2 lead. Zhang put up a great fight and
he managed to break back once to reduce game score deficit. However, under pressure, he failed to stop his opponent from earning a well deserved victory.
Ranked seventh in the Association of Tennis Professional’s rankings, Tsonga has been in commanding form since the start of this season. Having upset the likes of Roger Federer at Wimbledon Championships 2011, he has been more consistent
than he was ever before. Following his decent performances on the tour, he also improved his rankings considerably. He will be hoping to continue his impressive run for the entire next week to claim his second title of the year 2011.
