Jo-Wilfried Tsonga finishes this season at number eight in the ATP World Rankings – Tennis News
French number one, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, hasn’t been that much successful this year as he was in the last season. He took the 2012 ATP season as the sixth ranked contestant but has dropped two spot to finish the professional circuit
as the world number eight.
The 27-year-old displayed some cracking performances in the 2011 professional circuit but couldn’t repeat his heroics this year. Moreover, the return of the former US Open champion, Juan martin Del Potro, has been so impactful
this season and he has surpassed Tsonga to claim the seventh spot in the men’s rankings. Del Potro has been a silent figure last year, battling with niggling injuring and struggling to gain his vintage form. He had stunning run of form this year, bagging four
ATP championship titles and rose to the seventh spot 4,480 ranking points.
Czech number one, Tomas Berdych, has also raised the bar of his game this year and reclaimed the world number six spot by the mid of October. He won the same number of ATP titles as Tsonga did (i.e. two) but his overall performance
in the grand events has been far better than the Frenchman. Berdych registered thumping triumphs in Montpellier and Stockholm, and had quarter-final and semi-final runs in a number of tournaments to gain sufficient rankings points. He finished the season with
4,605 in his bag and the world number six rank.
Tsonga started off the new circuit with a championship victory in Doha but couldn’t go past the fourth round of the Australian Open Grand Slam tournament. He managed to feature the quarter-final and semi-final rounds of the tournaments
to follow, however, didn’t create a title-winning opportunity in any event for the initial nine months. It was in Metz where he won his second ATP title of the year. The French powerhouse carried on with his revived form but suffered defeats in the finals
of the tournaments in Beijing and Stockholm.
The 27-year-old finished as the finalist last year at the Masters 1000 event held on his home soil in Paris. He didn’t come up to the expectations of the local crowd and was dumped in the quarter-final round by the eventual champion,
David Ferrer. Tsonga took part in the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals and the last year’s runner-up couldn’t even qualify for the semi-finals this time.
Tsonga’s overall performance has been impressive but not as fruitful as it was in 2011. He has fallen two places to finish the 2012 men’s rankings at number eight and 3,490 points.
