Jo-Wilfried Tsonga looking for a positive start to the season in Abu Dhabi
The professional tennis player from France, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is hoping to make a good start of the year by performing well at the Mubadala World Tennis tournaments exhibition to be held in Abu Dhabi this week.
The right hander, who made his debut on the ATP tour back in 2004, is currently ranked number thirteen in the South African Airways ATP list. He had a mixed 2010 season therefore the Frenchman is now looking forward to begin the
upcoming year on a high note by posting some solid results at the Mubadala World Tennis Championships exhibition before starting the regular ATP tour.
Former world number six who was once regarded as the next big name in tennis has been facing great problems due to his injuries over the last few seasons on the tour. In spite of the fact that he did not produce any noteworthy
performance in 2010, the French player however did show some signs of brilliance in a few clashes.
Tsonga started his 2010 campaign by playing at the Australian Open in Melbourne where he beat Sergiy Stakhovsky in three sets in his opening round match. The final match score was 6–3, 6–4, and 6–4. The right hander next got the
better of Taylor Dent, followed by some other victories over Tommy Haas, Nicolas Almagro and Novak Djokovic. His tournament’s run was finally ended in the semifinal round at the hands of Swiss tennis maestro Roger Federer in three sets. The score line was
2–6, 3–6, 2–6.
The only other major event where the Gingins resident surpassed the fourth round was at Wimbledon where he pulled out of his quarterfinal clash as a result of knee injury.
The world number thirteen will take on Robin Soderling of Sweden in the opening round match of the Mubadala World Tennis Championships exhibition in Abu Dhabi this week. He did not play in this event last year as a result of injury.
While commenting on his this year’s participation at the event, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga said on Monday, “I have heard so much about Abu Dhabi from the guys on tour and it is a place I have always wanted to see for myself. The weather,
facilities, crowd and players of real quality make it an ideal place to start the season and prepare for the Australian Open, a tournament I love.”
