Jo-Wilfried Tsonga topples Nikolay Davydenko to reach round two – Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters 2013
Local top ranked star, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, eased past the former world number three, Nikolay Davydenko, in straight sets at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters 2013 on Monday. He summed up a 7-6(3), 6-2 victory against the Russian veteran to power into the second
round at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters 1000 event held in Monte Carlo, France.
Seeded sixth in this event, Tsonga showed his class and eventually pocketed the match. The contenders previously battled each other in Marseille earlier this season and after stealing the limelight, he took lead in the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head series by 3-2
against Davydenko.
The 27-year-old stated in an interview after winning the match:
“It was a pretty good start, but I can do better. I got broken from the start. But I did play a solid match and I was able to manage the situation quite well. I'm happy I won because he can be a very dangerous player. He's proven it in the past. If I was
able to win, it means I was able also to do something good on the court.”
In the first set, both challengers displayed brilliant tennis. Tsonga failed to ward off the only breakpoint he came across but cashed one out of four break chances to drag the set to a tie-breaker. He dominated in it and eventually pulled out the opener
with a 7-6(3) score line.
Ranked eighth in the world, Tsonga lifted his game in the proceeding set. He prevailed throughout the set and eventually clicked it with a 6-2 win.
The sixth seed is currently in great run of form. He recently captured a title at the Open 13 in Marseille where he triumphed over Tomas Berdych in the final showdown.
Later that day, Argentinean number two Juan Monaco ruled in his match and progressed at this tournament. He went berserk and stroke out last 10 games consecutively, eventually sealing the deal with a bagel. The Argentine made a dismal entry and after suffering
two serve breaks, he fell at 2-4. However, Monaco unleashed barrage of groundstrokes and went on a 10-game killing spree.
