Jo-Wilfried Tsonga outlasts Feliciano Lopez to reach final eight – London Olympics 2012
Fifth seed, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, stomped over the Spanish challenger, Feliciano Lopez, in straight sets at the London Olympics 2012, a major sport event which is held after every four years.
He juggled up a 7-6(5), 6-4 victory against the world number 29 to charge into the quarter-finals on Wednesday.
The French number one showed top quality tennis to outrun Lopez in their fourth meeting at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. After recording the success in 69 minutes, Tsonga
not only improved to a 4-0 lifetime in the FedEx ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Head 2 Head series against the left-handed Spaniard but also booked a spot in the last eight.
Ranked sixth in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Tsonga entered Games of x*x Olympiads with conviction. He smoothly held his entire serves but failed to capitalise on his
break opportunities. However, the French dominated in the tie-breaker, consequently clicking the opener with a 7-6(5) score line.
Tsonga carried his rhythm in the follow-up set and easily swiped his entire serves. He got the breakthrough in the seventh game and eventually pocketed the set with a 6-4 win.
Overall, the 27-year-old outshined his opponent completely. He hammered 13 aces and clobbered a slightly higher first serve share of 67 per cent in contrast with his rival’s 66 per cent.
Tsonga also struck 31 winners and prevailed throughout the match.
Next challenge for Tsonga is the second seed, Novak Djokovic.
“It’s going to be a big match [against Djokovic], but it is like every day,” the French star stated about his next match-up against the world number two. “I have to win and I have to win
for my country.”
The Serbian top went the distance to outmuscle the Australian veteran, Lleyton Hewitt, in a three set thriller to progress at this event. He summed up a 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 victory against the
former world number one on Centre Court.
The third seeded local star, Andy Murray, also earned the glory later that day. He bounced back to triumph over Cyprus’ Marcos Baghdatis in a three-set nail-biter to occupy the quarter-final
spot.
