Jo-Wilfried Tsonga overwhelms Jurgen Melzer in the third round – Monte Carlo Rolex Masters 2013
French powerhouse, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, had no trouble in disposing of the former top-tenner, Jurgen Melzer, in the third round of Monte Carlo Rolex Masters on Thursday. The world number eight took merely 57 minutes to wrap up the proceedings in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0, marching into the quarter-final draw of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Monte Carlo, Monaco.
The tall Frenchman was expected to come out as the winner but no one expected the Austrian number one to fall so cheaply. Melzer could win barely three games in the entire matchup, suffering a bagel in the second set to finish on the losing side in the end. Tsonga had defeated the 31-year-old twice in 2008 and extended his lead to 3-0 in the head-to-head series after winning Thursday’s battle. Tsonga took hold of the momentum right from the beginning and kept dictating the Austrian veteran all the way to the victory.
The contest took off with both players holding their respective serves. Tsonga had an early opportunity and seized it with both hands to register an early serve break. He held his following serve and imposed a 4-1 lead over the unseeded Austrian veteran. Melzer couldn’t recover from the early damage inflicted by the serve break from Tsonga. He succeeded to win the remaining serve games of the set but couldn’t break his opponent, eventually submitting the opener at 3-6.
Tsonga kept his winning roll in the following set and broke Melzer in the very first game. He went on for a six-game killing spree, breaking the Austrian three times on the trot and rocketing away to 6-0 in no time. He gave no opportunity to Melzer to get settled in the set and just annihilated him to register his victory with a bagel.
Tsonga will take on either the world number two, Andy Murray, or the Swiss contender, Stanislas Wawrinka, in the quarter-final round of Monte Carlo Rolex Masters event. Murray and Wawrinka will battle out for a place in the quarter-final round on Thursday evening and the winner will have an opportunity to go one-on-one against sixth seeded Tsonga.
