World No.8, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, won his match against Andreas Seppi of Italy in BNP Paribas Masters tournament yesterday and with that victory, he qualified for the Barclays ATP Tour Finals tournament. The year-end finale will
take place at the most esteemed tennis arena, O2 Arena in London from November 20-27.
French player had played this tournament in 2008 but since then he was struggling hard to break into the top eight players of the world. This year has been very influential for him as he reached advanced stages of most of the tournaments.
He started the year high note having reached the semi-final in Chennai but was defeated by Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer. He couldn’t make a strong impact in Australian Open and could just reach the round of 32. An emphatic run
in Rotterdam helped him reach the final of the tournament but Robin Soderling stood in his way to title triumph.
ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tours of Indian Wells, Miami and Monte Carlo were very disappointing for the French who couldn’t pass the round of 32 in all of them. He reached the round of 16 in Madrid but couldn’t make it through
to the quarters and lost to Robin Soderling once again. He lost to Roger Federer in rounds of 32 at Rome as well.
Poor run in Roland Garros was perfectly complemented by an exciting game play at Queen’s Club that helped him to earn crucial points and climb few ranks. A resounding run in Wimbledon helped him reach the semi-final but lost to
the World No.1, Novak Djokovic, once again.
His first major triumph came in Metz, France when he defeated Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia to clinch his first title win of the year. Following an impressive form, he reached the semi-final of Beijing Open but lost to Tomas Berdych
in an eye-startling three-setter.
French’s second major title win came in Vienna, Austria when he defeated Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina. He was flabbergasted by World No.116, Sam Querrey recently in Valencia but his stylish yesterday’s straight set win guaranteed
him the place in top eight players and clinched him the sport at ATP World Tour Finals after waiting three years.
He is a treat to watch when he is on song because there is no stopping this strong body French player. If he organises himself and minimize his unforced errors, he can definitely pull major upsets in the season-end finale.
