Jo-Wilfried Tsonga stuns Roger Federer in the third round – Rogers Cup 2011

Another tournament ended in disaster for the former world number one, Roger Federer of Switzerland, as he got beaten once again by the tall Frenchman, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, in the third round of Rogers Cup on Thursday afternoon.
The three-setter witnessed the Swiss maestro crumbling in a terrible manner, with the 13th seed Tsonga winning the battle in an assertive manner to qualify for the quarter-finals of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals)
Master Series event. The 16th ranked French wrapped up his 28th victory of the running year by settling the final scores at 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-1, taking two hours and fourteen minutes of play to repeat his Wimbledon feat this year. Tsonga
defeated Federer in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon last month in a five-set thriller, while the Swiss has defeated him twice earlier this season.
It appeared an evenly poised contest, with both men exhibiting some quality tennis to entertain the local crowd at the Uniprix Stadium in Montreal, Canada. Federer’s game play certainly lacked a lot to be desired and he was outsmarted
by the amazing proficiency of Tsonga to bag crucial points in the matchup. 10 aces of Federer were replied by seven from his opponent, who nailed two out of nine break points en route to victory.
None of the players were able crack in a serve break in the opening set and kept ticking the scores board on even terms. The Swiss maestro squandered away three break opportunities before a tie breaker was enforced into play. The
French competitor stung two vital mini-breaks to close out the opening set at 7-6(3) but the third seeded Federer made a strong come back to bag the second set at 6-4.
Tsonga started under the skin of Federer early in the final set and two successive break point conversions concluded an emphatic victory for the Frenchman at 6-1, sending him in the round of eight to meet the eighth seeded Nicolas
Almagro of Spain for a semi-final berth. The Spaniard defeated the 10th seed Richard Gasquet in the third round to make it to the quarter-finals of the Montreal Masters.
