Jo-Wilfried Tsonga upsets David Ferrer to make it to the quarterfinal – Wimbledon Championships 2011
Local crowd at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, England, was in for another surprise, as the 19th ranked Frenchman, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga defeated the world number six, David Ferrer of
Spain in the fourth round of the Wimbledon Championships on Monday afternoon.
The 12th seed Tsonga made a huge upset for the tennis fans all around the world when he defeated the seventh seed Spaniard in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(1), to book a berth in the quarter-finals of the third Grand Slam
tournament of the year.
The one-sided contest lasted for two hours and three minutes before the French absolutely devastated seventh seed in the third set. Tsonga reached the quarter-finals of the Wimbledon Championships last year as well, when he was
defeated by the British number one, Andy Murray, in four sets 7-6(5), 6-7(5), 2-6, 2-6.
Ferrer has defeated the Frenchman in the quarter-final last year at Rome Masters in straight sets 6-4, 6-1, but failed to put up the similar performance on Monday. The typical Ferrer rage was clearly missing from his game, as he
played a number of errant strokes all over the court to submit the contest to his opponent. The Spaniard had two opportunities to break the French serve but squandered away both of them, while suffering three break points from Tsonga in the contest.
The tall French had an aggressive start to the opener and won all the 14 first serve points to get hold of the game early. Tsonga’s powerful stroke play earned him four break points in the opener and he converted two of them to
seal the first set at 6-3 to get one up in the contest.
Ferrer posed some resistance in the following set and held his serve till 4-5 but the ballistic French finally broke the Spanish serve on the most critical occasion and wrapped up the second set at 6-4 to get a substantial lead
in the contest.
A more competitive third set was witnessed, with Ferrer showing some signs of life and moving neck-to-neck with his opponent. A tie breaker came into play at 6-6 but Ferrer crumbled once again in the decider, securing just one
point to lose the match at 6-7(1).
Tsonga entered his second consecutive Wimbledon quarter-final, where he will take on the world number three, Roger Federer of Switzerland, for a place in the semis. Federer was successful against the Russian opponent, Mikhail Youzhny,
in four sets 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-3, 6-3, to meet Tsonga in the round of eight.
