Jo-Wilfried Tsonga’s participation at the Wimbledon Championships in doubt – Tennis News
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga’s chances of participating in the third Grand Slam of the season, Wimbledon Championships, hang in balance, as he injured his right hand during his loss at the AEGON Championships on Thursday.
The world number five, who was seeded second at this ATP World Tour 250 event, was stunned by Croatia’s Ivan Dodig in the third round at the Queen’s Club in London.
The French contender fell to the ground in the sixth game of the final set and injured a finger in his right hand. He carried on his valiant effort with his itching injury but had to finihs on the losing side in the end to finish
off his voyage in London.
Tsonga had his right hand in an ice bag during the post match press conference. The Frenchman said, while talking to the reporters, "I think it's serious. I just fell down. That's it. I didn't do, you know, an exam for the moment,
but it sounds very bad.”
He added, “I will have a scan, but it sounds very bad. I felt like I broke something or I strained it when I fell. It’s only a finger but it’s tough because I have to play with my hand. At the moment I don’t know what is it, but
I will stay positive and I will see.”
The Frenchman later posted on twitter, "I will go home tomorrow (Friday) for a scan. I'm crossing my fingers that it is not serious and that I can play Wimbledon."
It will be a big setback for Tsonga, if he is unable to feature at the Wimbledon Championships. The Frenchman reached the semi-finals at last year’s championships, losing to the eventual winner, Novak Djokovic of Serbia, in four
sets 6-7(4), 2-6, 7-6(9), 3-6.
After a strong showing at the French Open, Tsonga was being considered one of the contenders of the Wimbledon crown. He had created four match points but in the end lost to the reigning world number one, Djokovic, in a five set
thriller 1-6, 7-5, 7-5, 6-7(6), 1-6 in the quarter-final of Roland Garros.
Tsonga has had a good season so far, having a 28-11 win/loss record. The Frenchman started the year in the ideal manner, beating Gael Monfils in straight sets 7-5, 6-3 to capture the Qatar ExxonMobil Open title.
However, he could not go a long way at the Australian Open, where he was surprised by Japan’s Kei Nishikori, ranked 26th at that time, in five sets 6-2, 2-6, 1-6, 6-3, 3-6 in the round of 16.
