Joakim Soria can attract attention of New York Mets in free agent market - MLB Update
Relief pitcher Joakim Soria can be acquired by New York Mets from free agency after the Kansas City Royals refused exercising option on him for the next year.
He boasts impressive credentials for becoming the linchpin of the bullpen of any team. As the Mets lack quality arms in their bullpen, they can strengthen it to a great extent by hiring Soria.
Unfortunately the biggest obstacle in their way toward this goal will be the financial limitations.
They have a number of issues to address in the offseason, for example offering contract extensions to the likes of R. A. Dickey and David Wright. They are about to grant them the contract renewals and allocate a huge amount of money as a result.
Such deals will further limit their ability to spend freely. They may be unable to fix loop-holes in the team despite detecting them as weak-links in the club.
Even before the beginning of 2012 regular season, they confronted financial constraints. They could not retain Jose Reyes by clinching a new deal with him because they did not have requisite resources. In the end, Reyes invoked the free agency and went to
the Miami Marlins.
Unless New York expands their financial resources, it seems they will continue having poor shows in the regular seasons. They cannot expect the current bunch of the players to take them to heights. After all, it is not about individual brilliances. A proper
team effort is required to ensure glories for the club.
The likes of Wright and Dickey alone can hardly ascertain that the Mets qualify for the post-season.
Even if some of the members of the team perform at potential, they cannot guarantee success all by themselves. For example, no matter how effective Dickey is on the mound, if relievers do not support him late in the innings he cannot register wins.
In light of this, Soria can be an ideal candidate to pursue in the offseason for the Mets. Skills that he possesses as a reliever can go a long way in helping their starters register victories.
It will be interesting to see how the Mets use their budget in the offseason and improve their line-up.
