and as a result had to endure an unnecessary spell on the sidelines.
After missing out on his earlier opportunity, the defender was expected to take some part in the Reds campaign for qualification in the prestigious European tournament but again manager Jorge Jesus preferred fellow new-signing, Emerson, ahead of him.
Resigned to the club’s training ground in Lisbon, it seemed that Capdevila’s luck had run out but in a turn of events, La Roja International was again inducted into the Benfica squad that travels to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Netherlands-c753.
This inclusion came as a surprise to his agent, Horacio Gaggioli, who claimed that the veteran left-back recently informed that he would not be taking part in the vital encounter but later expressed his delight when Jorge Jesus named him in the team.
"This is good news, did not. Two days ago I spoke with Capdevila and told me that normally would not be called. Now, it seems that the coach changed his mind.” The agent revealed.
Although Capdevila is now set to make his first appearance in Benfica colours, the former Villarreal man did not have a pre-season and this could affect his fitness levels but not to a great extent, according to Gaggioli.
"It is still not 100 percent, as did virtually no pre-season, you may lack some 20 percent. But he will compensate for that with his experience and I have no doubt that it will hold it at Benfica, and the Spanish national team,” he concluded.
With everything set for Joan Capdevila, he now begins a new chapter with Benfica, in what could be the last years of a trophy-laden career.
