Joan Duru and Caio Ibelli claim top honours in Round 3 at San Miguel Pro Zarautz
France’s Joan Duru and Brazil’s Caio Ibelli put on impressive performances to emerge triumphant in their respective Round 2 (Round of 96) heats that went down at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star San Miguel Pro Zarautz that went down
at the main event site of Zarautz in Basque Country, Spain, on Thursday, August 30.
Brazil’s Alexandra finished behind Duru in second place during the third heat, accompany the latter into the third round (Round of 48) as a result. Spain’s Goony Zubizarreta and Reunion Island’s Hugo Dubosc rounded out the bottom-twp positions, which resulted
in their elimination from the competition.
The fourth heat saw Ibelli claim the win to secure his place in the third round, while his compatriot Jana Belo accompanied him after finishing in second place. Australia’s Soli Bailey and Hawaii’s Kirin Jabour were unable to survive the heat after finishing
in third and fourth place respectively.
Duru found himself pitted against Chacon, Zubizarreta and Dubosc in a four-man battle for the Round 3 spot during the third heat of Round 2.
The 23-year-old Frenchman opened his account with an impressive 8.83-point ride and went on to add an exquisite 9.17 to his account, thus finishing the heat with a two-wave total of 18.00 points. The score held up until the end to see him through to victory.
“It was pretty fun this morning,” Duru stated. “I thought it would be harder but there were a lot of waves out the back and everybody got some. I caught one in the middle when paddling back out and I did a couple turns outside and it reformed really well,
that inside section was perfect to throw a big air.”
Chacon made the Round 3 cut as well after finishing in runner-up place with a heat-total of 10.40 points, which included a 4.50 and 5.90-point ride.
Zubizarreta finished in third place with a heat-total of 10.33 points, while Dubosc had to settle for a bottom-place finish after only managing to reach a heat-total of 8.66 points.
The next heat saw Ibelli walk away with top honours after opening his account with an impressive 8.67-point ride and going on to back it up with a 5.93-point ride, thus finishing with a resultant heat-total of 14.60 points.
Belo made the Round 3 cut as well after putting on an impressive show to reach a heat-total of 13.90 points, which comprised of a 7.00 and 6.90-point ride.
Bailey finished in third place with a heat-total of 11.50 points, while Jabour finished last after getting to a heat-total of 9.93 points. The bottom-two finish resulted in the ejection of both the surfers from the competition.
