Joan Guzman to fight Jesus Pabon in non-title bout on ESPN 2 Fight Nights - Boxing news
Joan Guzman, the former WBO super bantamweight and super featherweight champion, will headline ESPN 2 Friday ‘Fight Nights’ boxing show to take on Jesus Pabon, the surging Puerto Rican southpaw, in a 10-round non-title bout.
The two men will collide at Westin Diplomat Resort situated in Hollywood, Florida, United States. The brawl will take place in the light welterweight division and the whole fight card and the show will be officially sponsored by Acquinity Sports.
The fight is being denoted by most analysts as a one-sided sparring session since Joan overshadows Jesus in many significant brawling facets. Joan, 35, has been in a total 33 brawls and has never lost even a single bout.
He has won 31 brawls, collected a draw and received a no contest decision after Nevada State Athletic Commission thoroughly investigated the accusation imposed on him for using diuretic and eventually found Joan guilty. As a result of using Furosemide, Guzman
was suspended for eight months and his knockout win over Jason Davis was reversed.
The orthodox Joan is widely dubbed as ‘Little Tyson’ since his boxing style is similar to that of legendary Mike Tyson. The ‘Sycuan Warrior’, has collected 18 of his total wins by knockout and boasts wins over prolific pugilists such as Florencio Castellano,
Ali Funeka, Jorge Barrios and others.
On the contrary, his Friday night opponent Jesus has been in a total 19 bouts. He has won 17 of his total brawls and 11 of them by knockout. In addition the 31-year-old Pabon resides at 132nd position in world rankings as compared to Joan’s 22nd place.
Moreover the Puerto Rican is coming from a second round knockout loss to Javier Castro, a bout in which he lost his interim WBO Latino light welterweight gold. The bout against Castro was Jesus’ third consecutive title defence.
Guzman while graciously sharing the reason for which he is called the little Tyson said, “When I first started, I was knocking all these guys out and people said I looked like Mike Tyson in the ring when he was angry. One of my friends, always called me
‘Pequeno Tyson,’ and it stuck with me ever since.”
Jesus must come up with an effective game plan to slay the warrior who has obliterated each and every opponent brutally otherwise he might become just another pugilist who tried to stand in front of Joan but was nailed convincingly.
The show will be co-headlined by the non-title 10-round bout between Ed Paredes and Manuel Leyva and it will be televised on ESPN2 HD, ESPN Deportes, and ESPN3 on March 2, 2012.
