Joanna Maranhao captured Women’s 200m butterfly gold: Day five – Maria Lenk Trophy, Rio de Janeiro
Joanna Maranhao of CRF/RJ captured gold medal of the Women’s 200m butterfly on fifth day of the 2012 Maria Lenk Trophy in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on Saturday, April 28.
Maranhao dictated terms to her challengers in the distant butterfly discipline as she proved her eligibility for gold medal of the event.
With her stupendous performance, she remained in a lead of almost 20 metres over her strongest challenger and tapped the finishing end for gold medal by reporting a time of 2 minutes and 09.62 seconds.
Her commendable effort remained nearly eight seconds faster from Yana Cleris Medeiros, who followed her on the victory stand for silver medal by submitting a time of 2 minutes and 17.09 seconds.
The third spot of the race was obtained by Larissa Freitas Cieslak, who stayed 0.99 seconds slower from her foregoing finisher and touched the wall with the timing of 2 minutes and 18.08 seconds.
Cieslak was followed by Isabelle Franca Longo, who remained just 0.35 seconds slower from snaring bronze medal of the event and settled on the finishing blockade as fourth position holder by producing a time of 2 minutes and 18.43 seconds.
Subsequently, Giovanna Dorigon proved her eligibility for the fifth best spot of the race as she hit the finishing end with the timing of 2 minutes and 22.29 seconds.
She was chased by Patricia Pedroso Neumann, who suffered a deficit of one body length from her former finisher and completed her race in a time of 2 minutes and 23.15 seconds.
Seventh position of the event was secured by Gabriela Albuquerque Mello, who was almost two seconds behind and posted a time of 2 minutes and 25.62 seconds.
Finally, Aurelia Tereza T Ribeiro concluded her swim in eighth best place as she failed to upset any of her competitors and completed her race by clocking a time of 2 minutes and 27.69 seconds.
In addition, Maranhao was excited with her feat in the 200m discipline and aroused expectations of her supporters by expressing that she will try hard to excel at the upcoming 2012 London Olympic Games.
