Joanna Maranhao grabs Women’s 200m IM gold: Day two – Maria Lenk Trophy, Rio de Janeiro
Joanna Maranhao of CRF/RJ grabbed gold medal of the Women’s 200m Individual Medley (IM) on the second day of the 2012 Maria Lenk Trophy in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on Wednesday, April 25.
Maranhao spoiled the party of her strongest swimmer and her team-member, Mireya Belmonte, who tried hard to prove her eligibility for the title of the event, but failed to supersede Maranhao’s effort.
With her epic performance, Maranhao remained just an inch ahead of her closest challenger as she tapped the finishing wall with the timing of 2 minutes and 14.63 seconds. Her gold winning effort remained just 0.03 seconds ahead of Belmonte, who transpired
on the medal rostrum for silver medal by submitting a time of 2 minutes and 14.66 seconds.
Third spot of the race was secured by Manuella Lyrio of FIAT/MINAS, who stayed almost two body lengths slower from her foregoing finisher and stepped on the victory stand by reporting a time of 2 minutes and 19.56 seconds.
The bronze medallist was followed by her teammate, Larissa Freitas Cieslak, who suffered a deficit of nearly two seconds and hit the finishing end with the timing of 2 minutes and 21.52 seconds for fourth position.
Cieslak’s effort remained nearly 0.80 seconds faster from her following swimmer, Rebeca Bianca Bretanha of CORINTHIANS/ABDEM, who proved her eligibility for fifth fastest of the event by clocking a time of 2 minutes and 22.38 seconds.
The fifth position holder was trailed by Julia Volkmann of GNU, who was just 0.07 seconds slower from overwhelming the efforts of her former finisher and reached the finishing wall for sixth position by clocking a time of 2 minutes and 22.45 seconds.
Seventh position of the discipline was trailed by Giovanna Dorigon of Curitibano, who remained marginally slower from her preceding swimmer and touched the wall with the timing of 2 minutes and 22.56 seconds.
Last spot of the race was obtained by Barbara S V Frazao of FFC/RJ, who finished her swim in eighth place with an effort of 2 minutes and 26.06 seconds.
Furthermore, the session ended after the completion of all listed events.
