Do the two names sound alright for sisters in a story.

Evelyn is the younger (like 20-something)

Yes, those names sound like they could be sisters.

If they are 20-something now, they would have been born in the 80's.  I just looked up the popularity of Joanna and Evelyn in the 1980's.  Joanna's popularity peaked in the 80's, but it was never extremely common -- it just barely made it into the top 100.  When the parents named Joanna, they were choosing something in-style but not too trendy.  Evelyn's popularity peaked early 20th century, and it's experiencing a resurgence in popularity again in 2008.  It was actually rather out-of-style in the 80's, ranking a meager #288 in 1980.  When the parents named Evelyn, they were choosing something a bit out-of-date.  Most of the Evelyn's in the 1980's were probably named after a grandmother or great-aunt.  Since neither name was ever extremely popular, and since they both seem rather classic, I think the names still sound like they could be sisters, especially if Evelyn was named after a friend or relative.

As far as middle names go, how about Evelyn Joy?  I'm a 20-something born in the 80's, and that's my middle name.  Jean, Jane, Anne, and Lynn were also common 80's middle names, but I don't think any of them sounds as good with Evelyn.  Evelyn Jean, Evelyn Anne, and Evelyn Jane have too many "n" sounds at the ends of the names.  Evelyn Lynn sounds ridiculous.  Evelyn Joy Stephens seems just right!
