Day one of the 2011 British Gas ASA National Championships got-off to a flying start with the thrilling performance of Olympic medallist, Joanne Jackson of Great Britain, in the Women’s 200m freestyle category at Sheffield, on June 14, 2011.
Jackson beat Caitlin McClatchey with a very close margin, as she secured the fastest time of 1 minute and 58.32 seconds, while her competitor finished second with a time of 1 minute and 58.6 seconds.
Jackson has booked her place for the World Championships in Shanghai after her sensational performance in the Women’s 100m free-style category. She has also improved to the 21st position in the international rankings.
After her memorable performance in the meet, Jackson said, “That’s a great swim which puts me on the team for Shanghai. This time last year I didn’t think it would happen as I was struggling with health and form so to overturn that with a best time in two
years is a great achievement.”
She further added, “There were some fantastic performances in that final. It was great to see Caitlin and Rebecca pushing hard. It looks great for the relay.”
Rebecca Turner secured the third spot in the corresponding event with a time of 1 minute and 58.66 seconds.
The British star admitted that she will now move towards the World Championships with more confidence and dedication, as the event is pivotal for her in order to prove her critiques wrong.
Jackson claimed the bronze title in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. She won two silver titles in the Women’s 400m and the 800m free-style events in the 2009 World Championships in Rome. She took home the golden crown in the Women’s 400m free-style category
at the 2003 European Championships in Dublin. The British athlete has also won two silver medals in the Women’s 400m and 4x200m free-style relays in the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.
Winning the Olympic crown is now Jackson’s foremost desire and the upcoming World Championships this July, is the perfect time for the swimmer to prepare well for her ultimate goal.
