Anzhi Makhachkala midfielder, Joao Carlos, has revealed that he gave up a UEFA Champions League club to join the Dagestani outfit last year.
The Brazilian national signed a three-year contract with the Wild-division upon his transfer from KRC Genk, becoming the third Brazilian to sign for the Russian outfit after landmark signings of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jucilei-c19861.
If speculations are to be believed, Bayer Leverkusen were keen to sign the 30-year-old. The German outfit could have provided him Champions League football straight away, but the Bundesliga outfit lacked the financial resources
to compete with the Wild-division.
The Brazilian revealed that he preferred the ambitious Russian outfit because they offered him the right package at that moment. He admitted that money played an important role in his transition to the Russian Premier League.
“I did not take the decision to move to Russia lightly. Of course, I could have opted for a champion’s league club but Anzhi made a very good offer. Finances played an important role in my transfer, I will not lie.” The former
CSKA Sofia player was quoted as saying.
Besides revealing his champions league dream, the veteran midfielder urged his teammates to gear up for the upcoming third league round, tipping them to claim a European spot.
He went on to admit that he would not mind playing in the UEFA Europa League if Anzhi miss out on Champions League football this season. As things stand, they trail the European spot by three points.
“Now I will try to get into the Champions League with Anzhi or at least in the Europa League. This is our goal to end the season.” Carlos said
He added: “I am already 30 years old and I am perfectly aware that it's difficult to break into the Brazilian national team at this age. “
Carlos revealed that he has no regrets of coming to an unpopular league and added that he needs to continue playing well for the Russian outfit.
