Joao Luiz Gomes Junior wins Men’s 100m breast-stroke gold: Day three – 2011 Jose Finkel Trophy
Joao Luiz Gomes Junior of ECP/SABESP won the gold medal of Men’s 100m breast-stroke discipline on third day of the 2011 Jose Finkel Trophy on September 1, in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
The 25-year-old Gomes Junior impressed the Brazilian arena by winning the title of the double lap breast-stroke swim with a timing of 1 minute and 01.40 seconds. With his heart-winning effort, Junior remained 2.88 seconds slower than the world record of
Australian swimmer, Brenton Rickard, who clocked a time 58.58 seconds during his participation at the 2009 Rome World Championships.
Besides, the gold medallist was also 0.93 seconds slower than his own championship mark of 1 minute and 00.47 seconds, set by Junior in the preliminary rounds of the event.
He was followed by Felipe Ferreira Lima of FIAT/MINAS, who remained just 0.83 seconds slower than Junior on the wall and posted a second fastest time of 1 minute and 02.23 seconds for silver medal. Moments later, the arena witnessed a gruelling effort of
Henrique Marques Barbosa of CRF/RJ, who remained just 0.18 seconds slower than his former finisher and stepped on the podium for bronze medal by submitting a time of 1 minute and 02.41 seconds.
Junior gained a marginal lead over his podium competitors in the initial lap of the swim. His astonishing swim was viewed in the final lap of the breast-stroke event, where he cruised his way towards the finishing wall and kept every swimmer at bay to claim
the title of the event.
In the meantime, spectators also viewed an immense effort of Junior’s team-member, Felipe Alves Franca Silva, who remained only 0.03 seconds slower than the bronze medallist and reported a time of 1 minute and 02.44 seconds for fourth position. He was chased
by his team-member, Raphael Oliveira Rodrigues, who was 0.41 seconds slower than Silva and earned fifth position of the race with a timing of 1 minute and 02.85 seconds.
Meanwhile, Tales Rocha Cerdeira of CRF/RJ acquired sixth finest spot of the race, as he stayed only 0.06 seconds behind and clocked a time of 1 minute and 02.91 seconds. He was chased by Lima’s team-mate, Eduardo Aquiles Fischer, who ended his swim in a
time of 1 minute and 03.10 seconds for seventh position. The last spot of the event was secured by Angelito Cassandra of ECP/SABESP, who completed his swim in 1 minute and 03.76 seconds.
In addition, the crowd applauded for the magnificent efforts of all participants in the medal ceremony, whereas, the championship will continue for three more days to conclude all swimming events.
