Joao Sorgi battles pass Enzo Couacaud in the second round of Boys’ Singles – French Open 2011
10th seed Brazilian, Joao Pedro Sorgi, had a stiff contest before defeating the local boy, Enzo Couacaud, in the second round draws of the Boys’ category of the French Open. In the contest being played at Paris, France, the Brazilian displayed his amazing skills to take down Couacaud in an enthralling three-setter, settling the final scores at 6-4, 2-6, 6-3, to march into the third round of the Grand Slam tournament.
The contest was an enthralling one, packed with high quality action but it ended in the dismay of the local crowd, as Couacaud crashed out of the tournament. Sorgi drew the first blood in the matchup, clinching the opening set in 50 minutes after a tough time against the French opponent. The Brazilian slumped in the very next set and let Couacaud back in the competition after dropping the second set to bring the contest on even terms. However, Sorgi regrouped in the final set of the match and drove is opponent out of the competition to advance to the next round of Roland Garros.
It was a low serve game, as the two contestants delivered less than their 50 per cent first serve on target but the Brazilian brilliantly compensated for it by winning crucial points on regular occasions. His 45 per cent serve earned him 25 out of 35 first serve points in the contest, while he conceded merely one double fault in the entire matchup.
Couacaud’s bleak serve was broken on four different occasions and his six double faults on critical occurrences proved very taxing for him in the contest. The French hung in the opener for quite some time and exchanged an early serve break with Sorgi to keep the score board ticking on even terms. The Brazilian then stung his second serve break of the day to seal the first set at 6-4 and got one up in the contest.
A dramatic turnaround was seen in the following set, as Couacaud came out firing at the Brazilian to transfer the pressure. The French broke twice to seal the second set at 6-2 but his momentum fell apart in the final set, which he lost to Sorgi at 3-6 to mark an end to his voyage at the French Open.
Up next for Sorgi is the Spanish qualifier, Oriol Roca Batalla, who won his second round encounter against the eighth seed Andrew Whittington of Australia, to reach the third round of Roland Garros.
