Joao Souza outguns Tommy Robredo in opening round – BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy 2011
Match 2 of the opening round of the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy 2011 kicked off between Spaniard, Tommy Robredo and Joao Souza of Brazil. Starting off on Monday, 19th September, the two fought hard, yet, the Spaniard could
not get through to the next round. Winning 6-4, 7-6(5), the Brazilian went of qualifying for second round in just two hours and three minutes.
Playing against each other for the first time, the 23-year-old stunned the crowd and his rival overpowering him in both the sets to win in straight sets. Comparatively, both players played similarly. Souza dominated the first serve
wins and breakpoints which led to his win, other than that the world No.44 had it all covered.
Starting off with the match, Robredo opened up, however, fell short early as he was broken by the 23-year-old and followed. Serving out game 2, the Brazilian extended his lead to 2-0 before the Spaniard won his first game of the
set, 1-2.
Levelling the scores next, Robredo broke the world No.84 and served out game 5 switching the serve. With scores at 3-2, the Brazilian served out to level the scores once again at 3-3. The set followed with both the players winning
a game each and stood at 4-4.
Souza won his second breakpoint of the game, mustering the Spaniard to gain command of the set. Serving for the set, the 23-year-old nearly saved a breakpoint winning the set 6-4 to lead the match 1-0.
The world No.44 moved on to look for a win in the second set, however, could not breach the rock solid defence of the young Brazilian. Winning the opening respective serves, Robredo went on to lead the set when he served-broke-served
after levelling at 1-1 to lead 4-1.
Souza struck back with same technique immediately and levelled the scores at 4-4 switching the serve back to the world No.44. The two levelled up again at 5-5 and eventually ended up in a tiebreak decider. With the 23-year-old
getting on Robredo’s nerves, the Brazilian went off bombing the 29-year-old in the tiebreak winning 7-5, and took away the set 7-6(5).
Winning the two sets and the match, Souza cleared the opening round match securing 53 service points and 26 returners totalling 79 against 73 of the Spaniard to walk on to the 2nd round of the Bucharest Open 2011.
With a comfortable seat in round 2, the young Brazilian now awaits the winner of the match between Lukas Rosol and Adrian Ungur to rival him in the next round.
