Joao Souza sends Adrian Ungur packing; wins in comeback – BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy 2011
Firing up with the 2nd round matches of BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy 2011 on Thursday, 22nd September, Adrian Ungur went on playing against the Brazilian world No.84, Joao Souza, on classic red clay circuit at
the heart of Romania, Bucharest. The two clashed out hard before the 23-year-old mustered away winning 4-6, 7-6(6), 6-1 and into the quarter-final round.
Opening up serving first, Ungur grabbed 2 game points and opened up the scoreboard, 1-0. Following up the 26-year-old, Souza levelled up next winning game 2, 1-1. The two rallied out to level up again at 2-2 once again as Ungur
stood to serve one again.
Using the serve-and-break technique the Romanian led the match 4-2; however, the 23-year-old countered and reversed the technique, break-n-serve to level the scores at 4-4. With the world No.131 to serve next, the Romanian once
again played fantastic when he served and broke to conquer the first set winning 6-4.
With a strong hold over the Brazilian 23-year-old, Ungur served again for the opener; however, the Brazilian resisted and levelled up with ease. Winning one game each, the two once again stood equal at 2-2 before the two bombed
each other with a breakpoint each.
With scores at 3-3, Ungur served next and nearly lost the game. Saving a breakpoint the scores led up to 4-3 in favour of the local lad. Souza levelled up instantly closing the game to a tiebreaker. Finally, with one game win each
for the two, the match went into a tiebreak with Ungur to start with the first serve.
With the two battling out for the tiebreaker, Ungur made a startling comeback, overpowering the Souza with a cross-court backhand winner and taking away the set 7-6(6) to level the set score at 1-1.
Souza served out the decider set opening game, and rolled down the scoreboard winning, 1-0. Following the Brazilian, Ungur levelled up the scores and switched the serve back, 1-1. Hoping to be a tough final set, Souza made it look
like a child’s play.
Blistering away the Romanian in the next 4 games, the Brazilian extended his lead to 5-1, breaking the world No.131 twice and stood to serve for the decider game. Finally, serving out game 7, Souza took away set 3 winning 6-1
and won the 2nd rounder.
Winning over the local lad, the 23-year-old now sits in the quarter-final round to play against the winner of the match between Filippo Volandri and Marcel Granollers.
